Members of Singers Direct (Claire, Susanna, Michael, Chris and former members Shelley Everall, Diane Atherton, Jennifer Higgins and Andrew Carwood) performed Mahler's 8th in Edinburgh's Usher Hall some years ago to considerable acclaim. The scale of the work means that it obviously does not appear in many smaller choral societies' lists of achievable challenges, but combining forces with others is absolutely the way to go, as many societies do with Verdi's Requiem.
