Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks explores both the old and the new

Last year the youthful Andrew found himself challenging both himself and the make-up department at Scottish Opera, when he sang the roles of both Old Peng (see photo) and an Old Mountain Dweller in Judith Weir's A Night at the Chinese Opera, a piece now accepted to be a classic contemporary work.  This year he is involved in workshops at the Royal Opera House that are exploring works under composition for the Genesis Foundation, by composers who include Mark-Anthony Turnage and Ed Hughes.

By contrast, over the last two years he has also spent lengthy periods in Russia, as guest soloist with the Foundation for the revival of Early Music Festival in St Petersburg, where he is revered as a specialist in the Baroque field.  His musical flexibility is therefore recognised from Glasgow to Moscow.
