Susanna gets a surprise at the 2008 Three Choirs Festival The 2008 Three Choirs Festival found Susanna singing two concerts, one of which was of Vaughan Williams' little known Magnificat, with The Elgar Chorale, conducted by Donald Hunt, in Pershore Abbey. The building was packed with a capacity audience, and there was only just room for Susanna to squeeze into place between the front row and the orchestra. Having sung her heart out to the back of the cathedral, she was somewhat shocked to discover afterwards that the lady at her knee as she sang, but with whom she professionally and assiduously didn't make eye-contact, was none other than Dame Janet Baker, Patron of the Elgar Chorale. Dame Janet was very generous with her compliments after the performance however, while Susanna was extremely relieved not to have registered who was quite so close at hand until the performance was safely and successfully over.
